I had to load an earlier version of Ubuntu (7.04 in my case) and then went through the laborious process of updating to higher versions.? One of the things I noticed is that if you don't do a restart, but do it manually yourself, things work better.? I was able to finally get to 8.10 this way.? You must, at the 8.04 level make sure you have gone to Administration, Software Sources, Updates, and marked the updates for normal.
