Could be multiple things.

a) a misconfigured system: to find out, please post the output of
'im-switch -l'

b) a bug in nautilus, GTK, Gnome or other libraries involved.

c) a bug in scim, which is unlikely, since scim works fine in other text
fields in GTK/Gnome applications.

Also, it would be nice to know which Ubuntu flavor (Ubuntu/Kubuntu) and
release version (Gutsy, Hardy, Intrepid?) your friend uses.
