I used blender-2.48a-linux-glibc236-py25-i386-static.tar.bz2 downloaded from 
the given link and tested with and without fullscreen (./blender and ./blender 
-W).
Both worked without problems (except that it's a bit slow to draw the "about" 
screen, when joining areas or when resizing an area).

As for the blender installed from the Ubuntu repositories (Blender 2.46
(sub 0) Build), it works without problems too (and no slowliness) on
Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10. :)
