Public bug reported:

Insert Ubuntu 8.10 install CD does not matter which one I tried them
all. Tried all four options on the F4 option All options on F5 and all
options on F6. Pick an option on the screen such as install Ubuntu or
Test CD for errors or Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer.
CD spins up and screen says loading Kernel and the screen pops up that
says Ubuntu with the scanner thingy at the bottom moving back and forth.
At last the CD spins down and page after page of errors pops up way too
many too list or count most say something about ata0:1 the only problem
there is nothing at ata0:1. There is an AOpen DVD-RW drive at ata0:0
and a Seagate hard drive at ata1:0. The ASUS MOBO is SATA capable but
no SATA drives are installed. This same CD installed no problem on
several other computers with the exception of this one. ASUS MOBO is an
A8N-VM with an nForce410/geForce6100. I think the problem is the AOpen
DVD-RW drive, because Fedora 8 and Fedora 9 install and live CD's did
the same thing as Ubuntu 8.10. Windows XP and Windows Vista have no
problem with the DVD-RW drive. So I temporarily swapped the drive with
a different drive and Ubuntu installed no problem, but when I
reconnected the drive Ubuntu failed to recognize the drive or read
anything in the drive from a blank CD to a Music/Audio CD to a MP3 CD to
a Movie DVD. So I checked the /dev and /media directories and not any
entries mentioned CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CDROM, DVDROM, CDRW, DVDRW.
