Back to normal! Tried out the new xserver-xorg-input-evdev patch in intrepid-proposed (has Albert Damen's patch). That didn't do anything until I sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-input-joystick. The cursor was no longer being controlled. But I still had the problem with directional pads not functioning games. So, then I found this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=320683 The calibration of the joysticks by jscalibrator was the problem. Hope this helps someone else before they pull their hair out.
