Driver 96.43.09 now works for me after changing the "Device" section of
xorg.conf to read as follows (copied from prior version of xorg.conf
file):

Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000]"
Driver "nvidia"
Busid "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
