My problem came from the upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. Nothing was working,
none of the suggestions changed a thing, from unplugging the network
cable to editing alsa-utils to grub modules.

A fresh install of intrepid ibex from a live cd and the problem has
disappeared. Is the problem occurring for people with clean installs at
all or just updaters?
