I have the same problem here (just upgraded to intrepid). My card is 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02). Totem playback is as descripted, but mplayer -vo xv plays along just fine.
On another machine I have (ATI card with oss driver and compiz enabled) the problem is not reproducible.
