Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

Hi folks,

I had installed 8.10 on my laptop some days ago. Today I plugged in a
LaCie USB speaker pair. Result: No beep. Preferences -> sound lists the
device, snd-alsa-usb is loaded, I am in the audio group, but if I select
the USB speakers (Alsa) and click on [Test], then it just says

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 !
audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink:
Could not open audio device for playback.

The internal micro speakers of the laptop work fine. It doesn't matter
whether the USB speakers are plugged in at boot time, AFAICS.

If I boot the 8.10 live CD I had used for installation, then the USB
speakers work out of the box. If I boot the CD and plugin the USB
speakers later, then I get the error message.

Somewhere I read about running "/etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset", but this
produced just a huge bunch of error messages about "Invalid card
number", followed by the usage options of amixer.

alsa-utils is version 1.0.17-ubuntu2

Regards

Harri
