Public bug reported:

Since 6.10, ALL Ubuntu versions worked like a charm on the above type of Compaq 
desktop. Now 8.10 came out and it's just not willing to start normally. I could 
get it work in safe graphics mode. Though I was expecting Ubuntu to work 
perfectly on this computer. It ends up with a totally black screen with a mouse 
pointer which moves but the computer doesn' t react to anything, has to be 
rebooted manually.
Attached please find:
a photo of the screen and the configuration output files
