I'll apologize for my comments.  The way I read it may have been the upsetting
factor.  I spend 10 hours a day troubleshooting telecommunications system and
breaking down technical jargon for the people that are replacing me, kind of
aggravating.  Microsoft keeps messing with the personnal machines: I have two
that don't work the same way because of the effect updates had on them.
Company Security messes with theirs and it functions differently each time
(Microsoft based) they update.
This is all mote in regards to the sound.  I found a spot under Systems to
designate the source.  Whie the system knew the SoundBlaster was there, it had
to be told it was an Out of systems source.  I got it working by trial and
error.
My other problems appear to be driver issues; though my printer makes me
onder.  The system sees it, but when I try to print I get a message telling me
an unspecified error occured.  I thought I saw something in the Comminity
regarding this and will see if I cab find it again.  Thanks.

Earl,

I'm certainly not trying to insult you. I really do understand how
frustrating it is when things don't work...or regress from working. It
has happened to me, too, and it's awful.

I'm a volunteer, not a Canonical employee, and I'm trying to determine
which package to assign your bug against (alsa? pulseaudio? linux
kernel?), if there's already an existing bug report on your problem, how
to reproduce your problem, and if it's even possible for me to reproduce
it since I have different equipment.

In order to do any of that, I need additional information. The web page
with that additional information is at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems .

Please do not include the entire thread in responses to launchpad bugs;
the duplications can make the bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/276763 very difficult to follow.

Status in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Running Ubuntu 8.04 with Soundblaster24 sound card (original equipment).
Immediately after logon, get 'drum roll' announcing Ubuntu. Afterwards
cannot get any sound over speakers. Tried going to sites with video (news) and
running music cd. Saw a fix for Soundblaster16 problem that may work, but (been
a long time since I wrote anything) don't recall how to write additions to
bios files.
Have no ability to print! Printer, Compaq 1500 (and Soundblaster) show in
directories. Just not accessing when command is given.
Both were functioning prior to loading Ubuntu over Windows ME.
