Alexander,
NOT a dupe.
Changing those values does not stop my system crashing. Why does it look like a 
duplicate? Bug 268667 does
not report a total system hang.
   Another user reported that he used the same phone, and was prompted for the 
carrier. Why don't I get that?

BTW, my Nokia 6120 also has the latest generic firmware.

Since this happened on BOTH my laptops, I'm trying to figure anything they have 
in common, aside from the phone,
that makes me get a crash, but not most other people. (apparently)
They were both installed from the beta CD, and one upgraded. Any chance a fresh 
install from the official release might fix it?

But whatever changes are made in NM, there must still be a nasty bug in
the kernel to allow this. Has a bug been filed against the kernel PPP
code?
