Nizar, thanks. I compared them, and hal-wise they look pretty much
identical. For being completely sure that it isn't a permission problem,
please plug in your PDA in intrepid and do

  hal-get-property --udi `hal-find-by-capability --capability pda` --key
pda.palm.hotsync_interface

This should output something like "/dev/bus/usb/001/002". Do

  head /dev/bus/usb/001/002

(use the actual output from the first command), and verify that you do
not get an error message like "permission error". I don't suspect that
this is the case, since Joan Tur said that it works with the command
line client, but someone mentioned a hal problem.

Anyway, if pilot-xfer works, then it isn't a device permission or hal
problem, but a problem in gnome-pilot proper. Maybe other reporters can
try pilot-xfer, too?
