It appears to be related to the *wired* network: with only the wireless
network, sleep and hibernate work properly (as a matter of fact, it does
not wake up properly from hibernate, but it might be related to another
problem I have...).

With the wired network on, I still have the problem, and I can *not*
disable the wired network manually: as soon as I try, the nm-applet
freezes for a moment, then comes back with the network still on.
Furthermore, from that moment, any sudo will freeze without asking for a
password. Note that performing a sudo *before* trying to turn the
network down (in order to "cache" the password) does not help:
subsequent sudo will freeze as well.

Hope this helps.
