I agree that it should be removed, as it is basically useless since most of the new plugins dont support it anymore.
The manual installation might be a medium skill task, but it costs a lot of time to find the right steps to do it. I just installed ubuntu 8.10 and forgot what had to be done for eclipse. it cost me time for searching on the internet, just to find out that the recent CDT plugin cant use the old eclipse version 3.2 Its simply a shame, and becomes a reason for people not to use ubuntu. The report on the debian.org bugreports has been done.
