Public bug reported:
Talking about Intrepid - the release version.
32 bit live CD - video driver crashes on loading Nvidia proprietary drivers
(or running Nautilus triggered it a couple of times)
32 bit install - video system crashes near end of install - identical symptoms
64 bit live (downloaded 5/11/08) - same problem
Nvidia card and Asus MB which run Hardy fine. Suspect install is
attempting somehow to load some driver not used by live CD (until
nautilus fired up?). Firefox works though. Problem appears to be in
video subsystem as machine running and pops up a text mode message
saying video busted (or words to that effect). Imagine I could get back
to the prompt if I knew how but wouldn't help me do anything useful.
I lack the expertise to access relevant logs, but this is complete
showstopper to the ungeeky - a few months ago I would have concluded
Linux is for penguins and just stayed with Windows.
