If I remember correctly from when my desktop was still in operation,
there should be an option to "Guided Install - Use largest continuous
free space".  This should be the option you need to install Ubuntu for a
dual-boot with WinXP.  However, as with any case that deals with
uncertainty, you may want to back up the data on your SATA drive's WinXP
partition onto the IDE 40gig.  If you are uncertain still, then you
should be able to find certainty in the Ubuntu Wiki.
