The "Update Manager" told me there were more updates available today. It included totem-common and gnome-icon-theme in the list. I unmarked these items, and the update appeared to complete as it should. I guess I will keep unmarking these packages until I know that they are fixed. I am also still running on the wrong kernel ie 2.6.24-21. I assume that I will find out somehow how to upgrade to the proper kernel.
