Sorry for my late reply. I think we've found out the badger. The 'i' in line "----i---------I--- /etc" means that the file is immutable. This means that it cannot be modified: it cannot be deleted or renamed, no link can be created to this file and no data can be written to the file.
I don't know how you've reached this situation and if it is wanted, but if it is not then your system may hide other surprises. To set the directory to a reasonable state open a terminal and run: sudo chattr -i /etc It's also very strange that mount returns nothing.
