This is kind of dumb, but I think the reason it seemed like the graphics 
glitches were gone with 8.10 is because the basic
problem here is that video memory is not being refreshed during sleep.  RAM 
state will generally degrade over time, reaching a random state after a minute 
or so (but not instantly).  So of course, when I was regressing this bug, I 
slept the laptop for short periods of time, keeping the ram in a 
closer-to-correct state.

It's pretty clear that video textures just have to be reloaded on
resume.  The graphics glitches are all compiz-related, and look like 3d
texture corruption.
