I came across an issue with this and discovered that, the way firefox decides whether what you are typing is a search term or a URL is by querying the DNS server (usually your ISP). If the DNS server returns a result for what you typed Firefox loads it as a URL. If the DNS does not return a result, Firefox assumes its a search and queries Google (or whatever search engine you specify in about: config keyword.url)
