I think this is not a duplicate of Bug #120834. I suffered the problem
described in the other bug and it involved a crash of the xserver and
overall the impossibility of using hardware acceleration (i.e. the only
workaround was setting Option "DRI" "false"). Now with Ubuntu 8.10 I can
use hardware acceleration and compiz without crashing. The only problem
are some applications which are not running properly, but without
affecting the stability of the system. Moreover, just by disabling
compiz they are usable again and the make use of the hardware
acceleration (no need of disabling the DRI option).
Therefore I think this is a new and different issue.
