*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 202089 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202089
regarding: "In your case, make sure nothing is accessing the sound card"
this even happens when all programs are closed.
regarding: "In the first place, how come you don't have pulseaudio running? Did
you
remove it?"
No, I didn't remove it (fresh 8.10 install from DVD), but I found out why it
wasn't running (as I restarted my system):
sudo alsa force-reload
also kills the pulseaudio process on my computer.
But however,
killall pulseaudio
doesn't restore my sound (as reported in the other bug), only sudo alsa
force-reload does.
(to make it totally clear what I did:
restart my system
ps -A | grep pulseaudio
(response: 5440 ? 00:00:00 pulseaudio)
suspend
resume
try to play a sound using different methods
(response: I heard nothing, aplay question.wav answered without error:
Wiedergabe Wave 'question.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Samplingrate:
44100 Hz, Mono
killall pulseaudio (to check whether that restores sound)
ps -A | grep pulseaudio
(response: none, so it was actually killed)
try to play a sound using different methods
(response: I heard nothing again)
sudo alsa force-reload
(response: long standard output, no errors...)
try to play a sound
(response: works again)
(restart pulseaudio to test whether alsa force-relaod kills it:)

(test whether pulseaudio runs now:
ps -A | grep pulseaudio

sudo alsa force-reload
ps -A | grep pulseaudio

(response: none, so it was killed by alsa force-reload.)
