Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 8.10 i386, the powernow service won't start. Possible reason
is that in one of these startup scripts:

powernowd.early

dont want to (or cannot) load the appropriate powernow-k8 driver.
dmesg says:

[ 16.667045] powernow-k8: ACPI Processor support is required for SMP systems
but is absent. Please load the ACPI Processor module before starting this
driver.
[ 16.667300] powernow-k8: ACPI Processor support is required for SMP systems
