I got it fixed. I just upgraded to 8.10

This problem seems to affect many other GUI based commands such as sudo 
nautilus.
In any case, you can edit it by hand.  
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
sudo gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom

This will allow you to change some aspects of your login window.  If you
want to get rid of the beep when the login screen shows, use the command
below.

# SoundOnLogin=false (will get rid of the annoying beep)
SoundOnLogin=false
