the OpenVPN client knows that redirect-gateway is in use, the bug is
that it does not tell NetworkManager about it when running as a NM
service (instead of standalone).

I don't know what changed that caused it to break, though.  It could be
that OpenVPN used to tell NM about the default route before, which means
there would have been no need for the workaround, or that the code in NM
got changed and accidentally broke.  Or something else entirely, I don't
know.  Doesn't really matter, though, as it is fixed upstream and all
that remains is for the fix to make it's way into Ubuntu's downstream
packages.
