To answer your questions: 1) I was. In Hardy I had these and enjoy compiz alot. However, I read in some reports that these caused certain conflicts. I originally removed some of the packages while in KDE, rebooted and still had the artifacts. When I booted to Gnome, I noted that I still had the compiz effects. At that point I went into synaptic and removed ALL compiz packages that were still installed and rebooted. I've been in Gnome all day and so far, no freeze ups or artifacts.
2) In KDE I turned on some of the desktop effects, but haven't tried KDE since I removed compiz. I'll try that next. 3) I actually have both Gnome and KDE installed. I have seen the artifacts only in KDE. However, prior to removing compiz I got freeze ups in both. 4) It would be almost impossible to catch a screenshot. When I move from one desktop to the next in KDE the artifact is so fast that it would be hard to catch. When the system freezes I cant capture anything at that point. I didn't see any .xsession-errors file in my home directory.
