This seems to be fixed upstream (in the project itself, not in Debian), in
version 2.3.0. The changelog mentions:
* Fixed a crash in the xchat-chats plugin which occurs due to the
changes
to the conversation window in 2.4.0.
(typo, was probably referring to 2.2.0)
