Ok, I solved part of my problem. When I ran the upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10, I selected remove "obselete packages and it removed grub. So I ran: apt-get install grub and now inux-image-2.6.27-7-generic has been installed
But now Gnome does not run - I just get a blank screen.
