I got bitten by this bug, but only just now with Intrepid; it wasn't a problem in Hardy, Gutsy, etc. More curious still is that an Ubuntu Live CD displays the splash fine... yet an install does not. But test adding vga=791 to the boot parameter of the installed system does get a display going (albeit not centered)
