Sorry I lost the upgrade logs ... The local sys admin folks did a few
"clean install" experiments of 8.10 which wiped my machine.

Can we just close this ?  I/we were using  the distributions copied off
the local Xmission mirror, and the fresh installs of Kubuntu/Ubuntu also
did not work on my Dell T3400  (nVidia NVS 290 video) ...  For
mysterious reasons the amd64 bit distributions seem to be leaving out
some X11 display or login managers or their dependent libraries.

I gave up after a few days and  back down to 8.04 as only "clean
install" which gave a working X11 desktop ...
