Problem: couldn't sudo apt-get, or through Package Manager GUI

(Couldn't get the apt-cache policy packagename (Synaptic gives me the error
above from the app startup).
Error reported is:
<user>:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for user:
E: Malformed line 57 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (URI parse)
No files found in /var/log/dist-upgrade/
