Hi thanks for reporting your issue. Mp3 support out of the box has never
been included in ubuntu and cannot be due to legal issues in some
jurisdictions where ubuntu is distributed. The current best solution has
been to offer to install the appropriate codec when an mp3 file is
selected to be played and warn the user of the legal implications. The
issue is that mp3 is a proprietary formate any media player wants to
play an mp3 file must pay license fees to Fraunhofer IIS. In accordance
with the ubuntu and free software philosophy no license fees have been
paid. This is a pain in the butt albiet a mild one to anyone who uses
ubuntu or other free software operating systems in the future it is
recommended to store you media in open codecs and support their use so
that nobody needs to pay to play their songs. For lossy music files I
would recommend .ogg files to learn more check out vorbis.com. This is
not a bug and will be marked invalid as the functionality you described
is purposefully in place to prevent ubuntu users from legal
repercussions. Please feel encouraged to report any further bugs that
come to your attention.
i hope the explanation was informative and helpful
