I wanted to follow up on this closed report because it may be useful to others who come after me.
I finally decided to upgrade. But when going from Gutsy to Hardy, I encountered many unusual installation errors -- lots of "subprocess pre- removal script returned error exit status XXX" messages. This left the system in a partially upgraded state. Intrepid Ibex had just been released so I thought I'd start over and install it from scratch, erasing and reformatting the system partitions in the process. But, near the end of the installation from the Intrepid CDROM, another "subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 139" error occurred. At this point I was convinced I was looking at a hardware problem. I ran memtest86 (the one shipped with Intrepid) and it reported errors executing Test 8 [Modulo 20, random pattern]. I pulled out a DIMM and am rerunning the test to confirm that I've found the bad one.
