Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-21-generic
After updating to linux kernel 2.6.24-43 this appeared:
- Change mtu to 1392 (ip link set eth0 mtu 1392)
- Run IPSec based VPN client
- Exit client
- Change mtu back to 1500 (ip link set eth0 mtu1500)
System complains it cannot set mtu, then goes brain-dead and won't start
any applications or respond at the command line.

I cannot tell if there actually is networking, since the machine is too
brain-dead to support running anything at this point.
This is quite repeatable, but does so much damage to open sessions
(hoses browser history and forms for starters) that I would rather not
poke at it too much. After reverting to the previous kernel version,
the problem went away.
