Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

According to the suggestion made in this post:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/214105/comments/44

I am creating a new bug report about the X freeze using the "ati" driver
on ubuntu 8.10.

Here's the info on my system, as per the specifications in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#ATI%20AGP%20Mode%20Quirk

The system boots fine and X works with AGPMode of "1" only, not with 2
or 4.

The machine is a Dell Inspiron 5150, with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
graphics card (this model also had the option of an nvidia card, so not
all 5150s come with ati)

Host bridge info, output from "lspci -nn | grep 00:00.0":
00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV
Processor to I/O Controller [8086:3580] (rev 02)

Video card info, output from 'lspci -nnvv | grep -i "VGA compatible controller"
-A1':
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250
[Mobility FireGL 9000] [1002:4c66] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
        Subsystem: Dell Unknown device [1028:0149]

The system is not all original factory hardware. Over time, I have had
to replace the motherboard, the video card [and the lcd screen backlight
ccfl, and the power adapter, and did a few ram upgrades, and stuck in an
intel pro/wireless 2200 b/g mini pci card, but these should not matter
at all for the purposes of this problem]. However, the replacements of
the motherboard and video card were used pulls from other dell 5150s, so
/should/ be equivalent to original factory parts.

There is no AGP mode setting in the bios (bios revision 37, by the way).

I think that covers everything - please let me know if any additional
information is required, and i'll be happy to provide it.

Note also that the system runs feisty just fine, using the ati driver.
(It also runs beryl under feisty just fine, by the way, so I don't think
the graphics card should be blacklisted for compiz)
