Tested your old release, it works on my laptop like drunkenkillas.
acpi_listen gives no output for any keys, only "battery BAT1 00000080
00000001"

if my keyboard doesn't react, i switch to tty1 and go back (strg+alt+f7) it 
works again

Tested hal-info - 20081013-0ubuntu3+chrisccoulson3 + NVIDIA driver:

- Fn+F1 - Help  --> it works!
- Fn+F2 - Battery icon  --> no funktion
- Fn+F3 - euro-symbol   --> doesn't insert the euro sign
- Fn+F4 - display switch        --> not tested
- Fn+F5 - backlight on/off      --> no funktion
- Fn+F6 - mute  --> it works!
- Fn+F7 - Samsung MagicDoctor (Windows)         --> no funktion
- Fn+F8 - easy speedup manager (Windows)        --> no funktion 
- Fn+F9 - WLAN on/off   --> no funktion
- Fn+F10 - touchpad on/off      --> it works!
- Fn+F11 - numlock      --> it works!
- Fn+F12 - scroll lock  --> no funktion
- WWW key       --> nautilus or if open startpage in browser - it works! (no 
hanging)
- backlight keys        --> indicator comes up without taken effect + no 
reaction of keyboard 
- volume keys   --> it works
- Mail key      --> there isn't such a key
