The blinking in my case had to do with the TV out being active, adding a
monitor section and referring to it in the screen seems to turn that
behaviour off:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "tv"
Option "Ignore" "true"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Option "monitor-TV" "tv"
EndSection
But I agree, i810 seemed to work a lot better on my R52 ThinkPad as
well.
