Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

Hi,
I'll report two bugs that could be same:
1. I installed 8.10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 / Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series.
With a disk intallation, gnome doesn't start. So I installed 8.04, that work
great, and upgraded to Intrepid with Update Manager. No problem. But then
Xserver doesn't start with message "no devices found" and "no screens found"...
Ati card seems not to be recognized ("Configured Graphic Card" in xorg.conf...
I tried "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", but same message on "startx"...
Finally I went to the Bios, and disabled "graphic card switched mode", that
auto-switches from low-energy and normal mode, what seems only works with
Vista... now is ok, prop. drivers installed...

2.Quite same: I upgraded from Ubuntu Studio 8.04 to 8.10 (Axxiv NG12/Nvidia
Geforce 8600 GT). Same problem on starting, falling to terminal. But with
"dpkg-recfonfigure xserver-xorg", even if it doesn't recognize card, "startx"
starts gnome successfully, but without driver. So I tried to install prop.
drivers with GUI: it refuses to enable one of them (Nvidia 173 or 177). No
message displayed, when I click on "enable", it seems to install it, but then
it's not selected... Next start returns to terminal.
PS: no possibility in my Bios to change to "switched mode" disabled...
this xorg.0.log is for second bug

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
