I can confirm the bug on a dual Opteron machine. A bug like this is described here:
http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/6/8/254 It happened after Dapper->Edgy upgrade. Now it is used with Dapper kernel. I vote for Critical importance, because this bug renders systems with Promise SATAII150 unusable. -- The Oops report, somewhat abridged: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000008 RIP: <ffffffff880b76b5>{:sata_promise:pdc_sata_scr_write+21} PGD 37c48067 PUD 37bd7067 PMD 0 Oops: 0002 [1] SMP CPU 0 Modules linked in: sata_promise sata_sil libata scsi_mod ide_cd cdrom generic amd74xx thermal processor fan vesafb capability commoncap vga16fb cfbcopyarea vgastate cfbimgblt cfbfillrect fbcon tileblit font bitblit softcursor Pid: 1879, comm: modprobe Not tainted 2.6.17-10-generic #2 RIP: 0010:[<ffffffff880b76b5>] <ffffffff880b76b5>{:sata_promise:pdc_sata_scr_write+21} RSP: 0018:ffff810037d99d10 EFLAGS: 00010202 [ register dump ...] Call trace: <...>{:libata:__sata_phy_reset+103} <...>{:libata:sata_phy_reset+9} <...>{:sata_promise:pdc_ata_init_one+947} <...>{pci_device_probe+243} <...>{__driver_attach+114} -- Promise sataII150 tx2plus crashes modprobe on start - Edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/68973 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
