I experience same problem. I upgraded from 8.04 (no problems) to 8.10 on
a Dell Inspiron 6400.
Now, when I click Fn+Up (brighter) or Fn+Up (dimmer) *once* the
illumination slides to completely up resp. down, and keyboard input is
ignored. I am able to restart the X server by Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, after
which the normal behaviour is restored.
