I have a dell studio 15 (aka inspiron 1535) and have the same problem. ubuntu 8.04 is perfect, 8.10 has soft soft sound. I tried a lot and nothing. I found a debian user (etch) who have resolved the same problem on the same computer. I think this is the solution but I tried on ubuntu but I was not able to adapt it . Here is the link:
