For framebuffer modes other than 80x25 to function, the GX260 BIOS'
Onboard Video Buffer usually has to be set to 8MB. Leaving it at the
default 1MB usually does not work for the onboard 845G graphics chip.
Now in a fresh install of Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 from the alternate CD, I
find vga=0x305, vga=788, vga=0x31a & vga=0x317 all give working
framebuffer tty[1-6]s.

OTOH, regardless whether the grub kernel line contains either splash,
nosplash or splash=off, with or without quiet, nothing shows up on the
display except a blinking cursor until X/KDM starts, though on Ctrl-
Alt-F1 after KDM appears there are init messages preceding the login
prompt.

Furthermore, actually logging into KDE resulted in a totally locked up
system that required power cycling to recover, until after I ran 'apt-
get update; apt-get upgrade'.
