I'd like to suggest something. Try to run this command in the terminal:
alsamixer -Dhw Pay attention to the "-Dhw" part. In the screen that shows up, DOUBLE check if the PCM volume is set to 0. It seems that on some Intrepid installations, that is inexplicably so. Pump it up and see if you acquire your sound again. Please let me know.
