I understand what you are saying, but all of these machines were on
Ubuntu 8.04 previously (and FF3.x to the best of my knowledge,) and now,
on 8.10, the problem materializes.  This finding goes against what you
have seen.

Also, on another note, I have installed the gestures plug-in
(http://www.xuldev.org/firegestures/) and it does seem to fix the
problem without forcing me to use gestures.  Just thinking out of the
box, it seems to me that there is a common unit in all of these... how
the mouse is handled.

In justification of this thought I want to add that I have seen some
strangeness in mouse left and right clicking in Nautilus too.  I have
not reported it yet, though.
