Thanks for reporting this bug.
Examining the issue I found this bugreport 
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fontconfig/+bug/14310 with some 
interesting comments:
[paniq] the autohinter significantly degrades the appearance of known fonts 
such as tahoma, verdana, arial, etc. 
[Pascal de Bruijn] And the bytecode interpreter dramatically improves font 
rendering for all good quality fonts.
When a font looks worse with the bytecode interpreter enabled, it means it's a 
crappy font! It's either has no hinting, or it's hinting has been botched!

This means you'd be looking for having the autohinter enabled for
certain types of fonts and not for all fonts.
