According to bug 258128 this has been fixed in newer version of
update-notifier.
It would help if you could try to reproduce it with version 0.71.2 or higher of
update-notifier. I'm marking this report as duplicate of bug 258128.
Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the
other report.
