With ubuntu 8.04, I used the Twinview option in xorg.conf, and the X server
would automatically detect if the external monitor was connected at boot.
Additionally, if I connected a monitor (or projector) after boot, I could
enable it by switching screen resolutions in system->preferences->screen
resolution (or using the more complex nvida-settings application).
After upgrade to 8.10, if I enable TwinView X won't start, locking after "(II)
Initializing extension GLX", and I find myself in the "degraded" emergergency X
server.
Thus I'm forced to use the autogenerated xorg.conf, that only enables the
internal LCD.
After logging in, I am able to enable the external monitor using the
nvidia-settings application (as before), but that requires quite a few
clicks at every boot (and the TwinView property appears no to be
scriptable).
The screen resolution applet mixes all resolutions supported by both
monitors, plus the virtual twinview resolution, and if I set a
resolution it enables both monitors in mirror mode at that resolution
(with scaling), instead of enabling only the one that matched the
selected resolution.
