I think my real problem was, until uninstalling pulseaudio, I couldn't get
alsamixer to work with my sound card (despite trying to change the settings
for pulse and alsa).  I do remember, when I uninstalled pulseaudio, and my
alsamixer got automatically set to work with my soundcard that the PCM
volume was set to 0 (which I changed).
I sent a message to one of the guys working on the thread that my sound was
working, he said he would mark the thread closed and inform the rest of the
team.  In case you did not know (and sorry for having you work on it).
