To add to the above, something else has changed, I now intermittently see a screen flicker. It's like some application wants to change my screen modes, starts to and then is immediately undone. lshal -m shows nothing when this is happens. Not sure where to look.
I am wondering if I need to just manually hack the xorg.conf file and somehow take gnome's handling of this out of the loop.
